We had a loud storm roll through here last night. Mom stayed up with Mumford who is terrified of thunder boomers and the Budster was pressed tightly against the bed, on the floor beside me.
{BOOM!} [shudder and shiver] [pet pet] “It’s okay, we’re here.”

Fear is a horrible feeling that can strike even the bravest of warriors without warning but a warrior has options for dealing with it. What if you are truly helpless or you feel helpless? Fear is real. We have all been afraid at one time in our lives and no one’s fear is less real than another’s.

Psalm 91:5-6 says
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

It’s all well and good that the Bible says that but try quoting that scripture to someone who is terrified and see if it helps. Let’s back up and look at verse one.

Psalm 91:1
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

One might refer to that as a prerequisite for peace but would be the same as saying a person will only be sick if they lack faith. What if we informed the dogs that if they would only comply with verse one they would be able to claim the promise of verses five and six? It doesn’t work that way, does it? Verse one is not a prerequisite at all. It is not something that we will to do so that we can receive the promise. For a people who claims to believe in the grace of God, we sure have a lot of rules to follow if we want to receive that grace. What an amazing contradiction.

Obviously verse one is true but there is no “if” in that verse. Read it again.

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

Verse one is a calling, not a stipulation. It is a promise, not a rule we must follow. You might say that Mumford and Buddy ran to that secret place when the storm arrived because they knew they would be safe there. It is not as though they ever left our protection but when tried, they claimed it and rested therein.

We don’t have to walk around pompous and haughty, pontificating upon those around us to dwell in that secret place. In fact those who behave in such a manner may be showing that they don’t really dwell there at all. God’s presence and promises do not make us proud, they make us humble.

My wife dwells in my secret place and she has no need to fear the arrow that flies by day or the bogey man in the night but that doesn’t mean she will never be afraid. It means that if she is ever afraid she knows where to go. It isn’t as though she ever left my protection, she draws nearer.

Fear is a natural reaction to a threat but over time, that reaction diminishes because we know how the story ends. We know that if someone comes after us, they’re gonna get it and it won’t be pretty.

Psalm 103:13-17 [KJV] 13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.
17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;

Fear is not the result of a lack of faith. Even brave soldiers feel it from time to time. Fear is a natural mechanism that kicks in when we are threatened. The good news is we have a very protective Father.

Isn’t that cool?
