I had barely put both feet on the floor this morning when the Budster shot for the front door. No time to rub the sleepy from my eyes or run a comb through my mop, the boy had to go. NOW! Pants? Yep. (ya gotta make sure) Shirt? Sort of. Slippers? These will do. I made it to the door to find our little boy doing the pee pee dance. No time for a leash, I just opened the door and tried to keep up. He hit the grass and assumed the position. Tick tock tick tock, he was there a while. Once he had drowned whatever, he took off across the yard for the tall grass, his favorite place to…think. As I was following him, I did a Mumford. I lifted my head and sniffed. Something was definitely different. The morning air was cool and clear and there was a slight breeze from the east. I smelled breakfast. Someone was cooking breakfast. Now mind you, the closest house that direction is about three quarters of a mile as the crow flies. There is nothing between here and there except an old abandoned trailer, woods and weeds.
I couldn’t make out exactly what they were having for breakfast but it wasn’t oatmeal or pancakes. It wasn’t bacon but maybe sausage and eggs for sure. It would be like if you were out camping in the woods and you rolled over in your sleeping bag and woke up to the smell of someone cooking breakfast. That smell. It kinda made me hungry but more than anything it caught my attention. I smelled breakfast being made inside of a house three quarters of a mile away! No one is camping in the area. I’d definitely know about that. I’ve not personally met the folks that moved in but the Missus has. I wonder how they would feel if I told them what they had for breakfast and when. Think about it. Someone that far away knows what you did in the privacy of your own home.
And no creature is hidden from God, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.
As you read this, you are sprinkling tiny digital bits into the breeze and someone far away knows what you are doing in the privacy of your own home. Governments and hackers alike are watching you. The dog and maybe the neighbor down the street knows what you are eating. God knows what you are thinking. Like a distant breakfast in the morning, everything we do is in the breeze. That can work two ways, can’t it? Knowing that someone is watching could bring a bit of paranoia or it might be a wonderful opportunity.
14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 People do not light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.
16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honor to your Father in heaven.
Our distant neighbors were having breakfast this morning, they weren’t smoking a joint. We’ve smelled that too in the past from a different direction. We’ve heard neighbors across the road play Christian music. We know who has what caliber rifle or handgun. We know who has chickens and whose cows are upset. We know who burns what type of trash and from a quarter of a mile away, we have a pretty good idea what type of flashlight they are using when they step outside at night.
What do people know about you by what is in the breeze?
