Fur babies are so cute when they sleep, especially when they are dreaming. Their little feets wiggle back and forth and they make adorable little sounds. It looks like they are running and playing. Not all of their dreams are pleasant though. Mumford had some bad dreams after she arrived. We could tell by the sound that she made that her dream was not fun and games and we would intervene. We’d lay our hand on her and gently wake her up to tell her that it’s okay now, she’s safe. She’d go back to sleep in heavenly peace. Eventually those tormented dreams went away. When the Duchess dreams, her little feetsies wiggle wildly and she huffs with her chest pulsing. She seems to be having a lot of fun and she’s never troubled. Miss Annie was an avid dreamer with growling and muffled barks and her feet going like mad. Sometimes she’d sneer and show her teeth. She was always in charge after all. 🙂 The Budster is a gentle dreamer with a foot wiggle once in a while. Not much for that boy. When he sleeps, he really sleeps.
I remember watching the kids sleep when they were young’uns. There is nothing more heartwarming than to watch a child sleep. One night I heard my son crying and went into his room to see what was wrong. He’d had a dream and was upset. Apparently the Care Bears were leaving and wouldn’t take him with them. He loved the Care Bears. That was his reality and it spilled into his dreams.
So called experts say that our dreams are the result of a subconscious burp. They don’t use the word burp but that’s what they mean. That might be true at times but not always because I’ve had dreams that did not emanate from a subconscious burp. Some are scenarios and stories I’ve never even considered and some of those eventually come to pass. Truth be told, some very strange dreams I’ve had have come to pass. Explain that to my subconscious. I’m still waiting for others to be fulfilled but that’s a whole ‘nother conversation.
You might already be thinking of Joel 2:28
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.
I may periodically dream dreams but I’m not that old. At least I don’t think I am but that’s not the point. The point is, if God speaks to people in their dreams wouldn’t it be possible or even probably that He speaks to animals in their dreams? Animals communicate with God in a way that we cannot comprehend. Adam and Eve were tossed from the Garden but God wasn’t angry with the animals. Adam and Eve lost their ability to communicate like they did in the garden but I can’t find anything that remotely suggests that God cut the animals off as well and if that is the case (it is), they still enjoy intimate communion and communication with their Elohim, their Creator.
We are called to be caretakers of God’s creation. He has entrusted to us certain gifts and thus responsibilities in caring for His animals and the earth. The creatures in our homes and fields are bits of God within His creation. He breathed into them the same breath that he breathed into us. We are in the presence of beings that are closer to God than some of our human friends and God sees how we treat them. They are examples of His love for us and He watches to see if we love them in return. All of creation is an example of God’s love. It always has been. People just forgot that.
The next time you watch your fur babies sleep and dream, consider that God might be visiting their dreams just like He visits yours. Why wouldn’t He?
