Imagine never having a toy to play with as a child. No dolls, no toy guns or blocks or balls. Imagine never seeing a television or hearing a radio. Now imagine all of them appearing at once. Suddenly surrounded by strange objects, sights and sounds, how would you feel? Amazed? Frightened might be a more accurate description.
Before we rescued the Budster, he had never seen a television, he’d never listened to a radio and he never had any toys. He was terrified by our floor fans at first but with time and loving encouragement, he got used to them. The kerosene heater was equally as frightening and he still avoids it but is no longer terrified. He is now comfortable watching television and he’s gotten used to Mom’s radio in the kitchen but he still doesn’t understand toys. He is not even remotely interested in stuffed animals and if you roll a ball toward him he will step aside to let it pass. He is mildly interested in a cat toy with a bell but it’s more of a distraction than an amusement. We have a toy that is shaped like a tiny slipper that squeaks when you squeeze it. Never for any reason squeak that toy when the Budster is in the room. Never. Squeaky toys are scary. The sound upsets the boy.
Load up your toys into your time machine and set the dial back one hundred years. You pop out of your sparkly box into a different world where people would be terrified of your cell phone and your tablet. The electric carving knife from your kitchen? Oh my goodness would that create a commotion! A chainsaw? Terror would fill the countryside. The flashlight was invented in 1902 so if you brought one along, you might be considered a wizard or a witch or an alien from another planet. No one would understand what you had and there would be no way to explain any of it to them because it is not the time for them to understand.
There are spiritual matters that we do not comprehend. We have read a little about heaven in the Scriptures but we don’t understand it. Revelation 21:21 says “The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.” Gold as pure as transparent glass? You can’t explain that to me because you can’t even imagine it. It is not time for us to understand yet but one day it will be.
1 Corinthians 2:9
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
Just as the people you met when you stepped out of your time machine couldn’t comprehend your flashlight and the Budster doesn’t understand toys, we cannot even imagine what God has prepared for us.
Some things we can’t imagine and some things we can’t bear until we are ready.
12 I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come.
Some people take a lot of liberties with that scripture. They allow their imaginations to run wild and attribute their twisted mental creations to divine revelation. They claim the Spirit of truth has revealed a mystery to them but they can’t prove it. They want you to take their word for it. Did you catch that? They want you to take their word for it. Seeing that you doubt their word, they will twist and knot the Scriptures to sort of kind of prove their theory and a cult is born. Oh, they don’t call it a cult, rather a gathering of enlightened believers.
More than likely the enlightened one’s personal revelation came from a source other than God.
1 John 4:1
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
God will know when you are ready to hear what He is ready to tell you and you will recognize His voice when you hear it.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
Follow the Budster’s example and be wary of things that squeak, especially in this day and age. Don’t try to imagine anything that isn’t already explained in the Scriptures because you can’t and shouldn’t and if anyone approaches you, claiming to have received a divine revelation…
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
The next time someone comes to you peddling a revelation, pinch their nose, say “Squeak!” and see how they react. You might want to step back in case they burst into flames.
