The Spirit At Three Something

I’ve been running tired lately and haven’t been able to get enough sleep. Last night I fell asleep on the floor while the Missus was watching worthless stuff on television. It’s not her fault, there’s nothing but worthless stuff on television these days. Yet, I digress. Somewhere around I-Don’t-Know-o-clock, she woke me up and sent me to bed. Plop. Zzzzzz. Around three-something I was wandering in dreamland when I suddenly woke up to see the Budster walk across the room and lay down in the doorway. What’s he doing? He normally sleeps beside the bed. I really wanted to roll over and go back to sleep but something nudged me so I got up, got dressed and when I looked over at the boy, he started walking toward the front door. That’s what I thought.

Coat, leash, headlamp, open the door and WHOOSH! we’re off! He (we) RAN to the dumpster and he relieved himself. Then he (we) RAN to the tall grass and he number two’d it. Then he (we) RAN back to the house, tail waggin’ and happy, his, not mine. Back inside, leash put away, headlamp put away, coat off and now Mumford has to go. Of course. Coat, leash, headlamp, open the door and WHOOSH! we’re off like a turtle. She (we) meandered into the short grass near the house, pee’d (she, not me) and back inside. Leash put away, headlamp put away, coat off and now I’m awake. Of course, I’m awake. Why wouldn’t I be awake?

I had no regrets about being awakened and getting up because as it turned out, there was a need. I’m amazed that I woke up at just the right time and can’t figure out how God did it. Yes, I am convinced it was Him. He knows the animals’ needs and He knows that we care about them. Why wouldn’t He wake me up? It’s happened before, this weird wakey-upy thing, the feeling that I should be doing something. I know you’ve experienced it too from time to time. My advice is to pay attention when it happens. Don’t roll over and go back to sleep.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-21
16 Rejoice evermore.
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19 Quench not the Spirit.
20 Despise not prophesyings.
21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

We like to quote verses 16 through 18 but what about 19 through 22?

If I rolled over and went back to sleep, ignoring Buddy, wouldn’t verse 19 apply? Instead, I got up and got dressed and the second I opened that door, verse 21 was fulfilled.

You might be thinking, “That’s a stretch” but is it really? Does God only speak to us about lofty and noble things or does He also care about the simple things? If God can’t depend on us to get up and take the dog outside when it’s inconvenient, what makes us think He can trust us with something lofty and noble? Luke 16:10

The worship team wasn’t playing this morning and there was no “Thus saith the Lord” proclamation when I received the nudge but those things aren’t necessary and we all know that. Those are things that make us feel better about our religion and get us in the mood to feed the offering plate that will soon follow. Truth. Deal with it.

When you least expect it, you might feel a nudge. Pay attention to it. Verse 21 “Prove all things…” If the nudge was important, you will know. If it wasn’t, dismiss it and move on. No harm, no foul. After a while, you will be able to tell the God nudges from the brain spasms. You will be used to acting on the familiar nudges and one day that nudge might prove to be of the utmost importance. It might even save your life, but you will never find out if you continue to roll over and go back to sleep.

If you quench the Spirit at three something because it’s inconvenient, you might want to let God know what hours you are open for service so that He doesn’t bother you when you want to sleep.

Buddy’s happy, Mumford’s happy and I think God’s happy too. I’d rather miss some sleep than the opportunity for obedience and service.
